While I’ve used Patriot Payroll before, I’ve never used Patriot Accounting. While I was pretty happy with what I experienced, there was one thing lacking. Here’s my observations
What I Liked
- 1099’s Not an Afterthought: Whenever you pay someone, you can tell that Patriot wants to make sure you are not neglecting 1099’s. When you set up a vendor, right after you enter the name, you are being asked about 1099. You will have no reason to not be prepared for 1099’s in January.
- Journal Entry Difference: This is such a simple thing that I can’t believe QuickBooks hasn’t added this feature. When you enter a Journal Entry in Patriot, you get the total debits, the total credits, and the difference! In Desktop, I often add a new row to a journal entry just to see the difference. What a pain!
- Dashboard is Actually Useful: At least it’s useful for an accountant. You basically get the trial balance right on the overview. I would love this!
- Importing Transactions: It looks like it might be possible to dump transactions from QuickBooks into Excel and import them into Patriot.
My Concern
This is the one concern I have right now: You likely need a separate donor management system. With the deposits, you can’t add a donor/customer. I can’t even see how you can add multiple lines in a deposit and add the donor to a memo line. I don’t see any way to enter a Sales Receipt which is the work around in QuickBooks. It looks like the only way would be to enter invoices and then payments which seems too tedious.
