This month I’m going to sign up for Patriot Software to see how easy it is to get started. It costs $20 to $30 per month. They didn’t ask me for any payment info so I will take advantage of the free trial period.
First Impression
- Simplicity: One of the first things I noticed is the menu is very simple…Payroll, Accounting, Reporting, and Settings. Compare that to QuickBooks Online’s menu which I use every day but still manage to get lost.
- Accountant Friendly: I liked how you can add Account Numbers and how setting up the Chart of Accounts seems pretty easy. I also appreciated the option to use an accounting basis and the close an accounting period.
- Importing: One of the challenges will be in switching from QuickBooks to any other software is the amount of data you have in QuickBooks. Patriot looks like it allows you to import customers, vendors, and transactions with a spreadsheet. In theory, you should be able to just export this data from QuickBooks, reformat it, and then import the data.
Overall, I’m really hopeful for Patriot Software to be a solid alternative to QuickBooks.
