Why two pens?
First reason, I think responsible adults should usually carry a pen on them. I don’t like having to ask for a pen when there is something to sign or notes needing to written. It makes me feel like I’m in junior high again.
Second reason, I carry two pens because I like options. When I have multiple meetings, I can keep notes for one meeting in one color and then another meeting in a different color. That way the notes can stay separate. I also like calendaring appointments in my planner in red and tasks in black.
Why a paper planner?
First reason, paper means permanence. When you write something down on paper with a pen, it’s usually there forever. This is good for historical purposes, but it also means that if I write down a goal or a task, I’m really committing to it. It will stay on that paper forever.
Second reason, paper leads to thoughtfulness. Because writing on paper is more work and takes longer, I think I tend to put more thought into what I write. My paper journal is never going to “auto-complete” my sentences so I will have to finish each thought.
Third reason, paper helps me remember. If I write something on paper vs in an email or text, there is something about the process that seems to commit it to memory. I will remember details better. I often will be able to remember approximately when I wrote it down so I can look it up…even years after the fact.
Fourth reason, paper doesn’t need electricity or wi-fi. No matter the location, the time of day, or anything else, pen and paper is ready to record. Since I also use a flip phone, I don’t have to wait to get back to my computer before I know what is on my calendar.
