My Top 3 Resources for Church Treasurers

I’ve spent over 20 years as a treasurer in the church world. Like most people that end up as their church’s treasurer, I never aspired to the position. My church had been advertising for a new treasurer for a couple of months, and I applied mostly out of pity. I felt like it was something I could do well that would benefit the church. I also was trying to pay off college loans at the time so a little extra money was appreciated.

Although I was a CPA, I was by no means overqualified for the position. I new my debits and credits, but the church worlds is a completely different animal. Here are the top resources I’ve found for helping me serve well as a church treasurer.

#1 – Richard Hammar’s Church & Clergy Tax Guide

When I first started as a church treasurer, I started looking for a book or a website that would help. Fortunately I stumbled across Richard Hammar who is regarded as one of the top experts in church and clergy tax world. Hammar puts out an updated version of his Guide every year. I used to get an updated version every 3 or 4 years. Now I get it every year.

Have ever tried to Google a church tax issue? The IRS rarely gives you a solid answer so you will find a variety of conflicting advice. Hammar provides a reliable standard that will keep you out of trouble with the IRS.

#2 – The Pastor’s Wallet

I found this blog about 5 or 6 years ago. While Hammar’s Guide is comprehensive and can be intimidating, The Pastor’s Wallet has a way of boiling down church and clergy finance issues down to a concise and clear explanation. In recent years, The Pastor’s Wallet has added a Facebook community which is a great supplement.

#3 – Church Network or Denomination

As the church treasurer, you know exactly how much the church is paying to be part of a denomination or network. How does this money actually benefit the church? Is it just pastor insurance…guaranteeing to replace or repair your pastor? The money you pay should guarantee some level of advice and guidance on church finances. Find their website and look for the resources available. Don’t be afraid to also call or email either if you can’t find what you are looking for.
