The most useful new feature of Windows (at least for us nerdy accountants) is called Snap Windows. Snap Windows allows you to quickly and easily organize the different windows/open programs on your computer screen.
To make sure this feature is turned on, go to:
- Settings
- System (near the top of the Settings menu)
- Multitasking (about halfway down the System’s menu)
- Snap Windows: Make sure this is turned on
This turns on a number of ways to help you split your screen and organize your open programs (windows). The one I use almost exclusively is when you hover over the Maximize button for a program (upper left corner next to the X). Your options to split and organize your screen show up.
How I use Snap Windows
- Creating Financial Statements: When creating financial statements, a lot of times I’ll have my Excel financial statement open at the same time my accounting system (QuickBooks Online). I split my screen so it’s easier to update numbers or add notes about unusual transactions.
- Answering Emails: Often people are asking for info. I’ll have my email open as well as a spreadsheet, web browser, or accounting system open.
- Sending Multiple Similar Emails: When reporting, I might have a similar subject and body, but different attachments, different amounts, and maybe some other wording added.
- Updating Spreadsheets: I have a lot of spreadsheets that I update regularly for tracking purposes. Usually I’m tracking investments or bank balances. Instead of copying and pasting or trying to quickly memorize and type, I can have both the online banking open as well as the spreadsheet.
