Episode 5: Is Aplos a good alternative to QuickBooks

I’m not even going to test Aplos. Aplos is a nonprofit accounting system that looks pretty awesome. It handles fund accounting and is specifically designed for churches and nonprofits. With most other accounting programs, nonprofits are an afterthought.

So why am I not even going to give Aplos a test? Two reasons:

  1. Cost: For the Core version, it costs $1,548/year. That’s more than the Plus version of QuickBooks Online. Payroll isn’t included either which could have offset some of the cost. I’m looking for a cheaper alternative.
  2. Learning Curve: I usually recommend QuickBooks to churches and nonprofits because it’s so prevalent. I live in a town of 25,000 people. I would bet that you could find close to a 1,000 people that have QuickBooks experience. I wonder if I could find a dozen people in town that have ever used Aplos.

What grade do I give Aplos?

C+ Grade – This is the opposite of GnuCash where the price was perfect but the functionality was lacking. Aplos has too high of a price. If I was paying full price for QuickBooks Online already, I would consider it.
