Having been enmeshed in the church financial world since 2003, I'm trying to share some of what I'm learning. I'm also happily married with three kids. Weekly I forget my age to play co-ed volleyball.

Understanding the United Methodist Pension Plan

The United Methodist pension plan is pretty confusing for most people…even those enrolled in it. I’m not going to explain the acronyms, but I will describe exactly what benefits the church is paying for through their Pension Direct Bill and how the bill is calculated. I think this would be a good overview for a church finance committee or Staff-Pastor Relations Committee.

Need Church Committee Training?

In recent months, I’ve been reminded of the important relationship between Management and Leadership. These are God-given gifts and callings that are both necessary for a church to fulfill their purpose. In many churches, management is done by committee through the trustees, finance committee, and staff-pastor relations committee. This post includes links to video resources and trainings to help your committees start 2022 off right.

How should a Pastor fill out their W-4?

I love this time of year! I like the cold weather and the smell of tax forms. Before the end of the month, I should have my taxes filed and my withholdings adjusted.

This is the time of year to start thinking about how much you are putting aside for taxes. You can set your withholdings by properly completing Form W-4, but the revised Form is tricky…especially for clergy.

Top 10 Predictions for 2022

There are people that make predictions but never look back to see how accurate they were (e.g., weathermen and economists). There are people that never make predictions but claim that they knew all along what was going to happen. I’m going to try to be in the rare third group that makes predictions and then acknowledges where I was right or wrong. Some of these predictions are fun and dumb. Others might be a little controversial. Enjoy!

Who gets a 1099-NEC?

It seems like every year, I have questions about who should get a 1099. Every year, I look up the answer and get that straight in my mind. Every year, I then forget the answer until next year. If you and your church get nervous about getting 1099’s to all the write people, this is for you.
